Kavanah Cards were created in Mt. Airy, my home neighborhood filled with well-educated, spirited progressive Jews of all stripes. Jewish Angel Cards are very popular here; I was charmed by them but wanted to move away from the angel model. I chose Kavanot, a traditional Jewish modality for self-examination and spiritual focus.
Many people helped me clarify this vision and bring it to fruition and I am very grateful to them all.
Thank you to my Creativity Group: Gloria Reisman, Valerie Root-Wolpe, and Eileen Sherman. They were patient and helpful listeners as I workshopped through the idea.
Thanks also to Russell Alman, Naomi Jane Bailey, Bobbie Breitman, Dr.Ellen Frankel, Rabbi Dayle Friedman, Rabbi Shai Gluskin, Marga Hirsch, Gabrielle Kaplan-Meyer, Deborah Meyer, Dr. Joyce Norden, Elizabeth Ochs, Dr. Vanessa Ochs, Lesley Pontz, Anna Rosenfield, Debbie Schein, Rabbi Jeff Schein, Mindy Shapiro, Rabbi Reena Spicehandler, and Rabbi Jacob Staub, all of whom generously offered useful advice and creative suggestions.
A mammouth thank you to both Dr. Adina Newberg, my friend and wise Kavanah Card Hebraist and to Benjamin Kamm, my talented production assistant and webmaster. And above all, thanks to David Teutsch, my husband of endless Savlanut/patience.
You don't always pick what project you create; sometimes the project picks you. Kavanah Cards was just such a project, and I am thankful to the One Who Sustains our Efforts for its completion.
